Job Description: Theater Archivist
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Theater Archivist to oversee the management, preservation, and documentation of our theater's historical records, artifacts, and collections. The Theater Archivist will play a critical role in safeguarding and promoting the rich history of our performing arts organization. This individual will work closely with the artistic team, production staff, and other stakeholders to ensure the proper maintenance, accessibility, and integrity of our theater's archival materials.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement comprehensive archival policies and procedures for the theater, including collection acquisition, appraisal, processing, preservation, and access to materials.
2. Organize, catalog, and maintain a systematic and efficient archival system for all theater-related documents, photographs, scripts, playbills, production records, audiovisual materials, and other artifacts.
3. Conduct ongoing assessment and evaluation of the archival collection to identify preservation needs, prioritize conservation efforts, and recommend appropriate storage solutions.
4. Collaborate with internal departments, external organizations, and donors to acquire, document, and accession new materials into the theater's archives.
5. Digitize and create digital surrogates of archival materials to ensure accessibility and facilitate research and educational initiatives.
6. Develop and maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of the archival holdings, including detailed records of acquisition, condition, location, and accessibility.
7. Respond to research inquiries and provide support to scholars, historians, theater professionals, and other interested parties who require access to the theater's archival materials.
8. Assist in the planning and execution of exhibitions, displays, and educational programs that showcase the theater's archival collections.
9. Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to promote the theater's historical resources through various channels, including print and online publications, social media, and public presentations.
10. Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and research trends in theater archiving to ensure the theater's archival practices align with current standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in theater arts, library science, archival studies, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Proven experience working as an archivist, preferably within a theater or performing arts organization.
3. Strong knowledge of archival principles, methodologies, and best practices, including cataloging and metadata standards.
4. Familiarity with preservation techniques for various archival materials, including paper documents, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and digital files.
5. Proficient in using archival management systems, databases, and other related software.
6. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
7. Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate and complete records.
8. Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to assess the historical significance of materials and evaluate preservation priorities.
9. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and provide assistance to researchers.
10. Knowledge of copyright laws and intellectual property rights related to archival materials.
11. Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and technological advancements in the field of archiving.
